The heart of the exhibition
was The Midden – a domestic rubbish coup discovered at the
bottom of artist Janet McEwan’s garden in Aberdeenshire in
the summer of 2002. The midden is shown in its entirety, nothing
has been omitted, nothing has been discarded.

The midden is thought to span around one hundred
years, from the 1850s until the 1960s. Thereafter the local authority
collected and transported domestic waste to communal dumps, the predecessors
of landfill sites such as Nether Dallachy.
